Poetry: ‘Safe as Houses’

A poem about house and history, not sponsored by Zoopla.

Safe as Houses

The most expensive house on the street.

Dreams aren’t free.
10 grand over the asking price,
40 over the average.
Solicitor’s fees.

Our life arcs back into a mysterious history,
110 year-old sash windows
Opened and closed
By people we’ve never known
And have nothing in common with
Apart from the fact that our children will be conceived
In the same rooms they died in.

10 grand over asking,
Quietly thriving,
On-street parking,
Overlooked garden.

Furiously still,
Rages into mystery,
Stable as history,
Shaky as prices,
Safe as houses.
